If you are planning a trip to South Korea, Nami Island (Namiseom) should absolutely be on your itinerary. Famous for its breathtaking tree-lined avenues, freely roaming animals, and its romantic atmosphere—made globally famous by the hit Korean drama Winter Sonata—Nami Island is a magical half-moon-shaped island located in Chuncheon, just a short trip from Seoul.
Interestingly, Nami Island declared its cultural independence in 2006 and calls itself the "Naminara Republic." When you purchase your entrance ticket, you are actually buying a "visa" to enter this micro-nation!
Whether you are looking for a peaceful nature walk, a romantic getaway, or an adrenaline-pumping zipline entrance, this comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know to make your visit seamless and unforgettable.
Book your trip to Nami Island here!
1. How to Get to Gapyeong Station (The Gateway to Nami Island)
Nami Island does not have its own train station. The closest station is Gapyeong Station, which is easily accessible from Seoul.
Option A: ITX-Cheongchun Train (Fastest & Most Comfortable)
Route: Yongsan Station or Cheongnyangni Station (Seoul) → Gapyeong Station
Time: About 55 minutes from Yongsan.
Tip: Tickets sell out fast, especially on weekends and during autumn. Book in advance via the Korail website or app.
Option B: Gyeongchun Subway Line (Budget-Friendly)
Route: Take the subway to Sangbong Station (Line 7/Gyeongui-Jungang) → Transfer to the Gyeongchun Line → Get off at Gapyeong Station.
Time: About 1 hour and 20 minutes. You can use your standard T-Money transit card.
Once you arrive at Gapyeong Station, you need to reach the Nami Island Ticket Box / Ferry Terminal.
By Taxi: It takes about 5 minutes and costs around 4,000 – 5,000 KRW.
By Bus: You can take the Gapyeong City Tour Bus or local bus, but taxis are generally faster and highly recommended for small groups.
2. How to Enter Nami Island: Ferry vs. Zipline
There are no bridges connecting Nami Island to the mainland. You have two exciting ways to cross the Han River and enter the Naminara Republic.
Method 1: The Traditional Ferry (Most Popular)
Your entrance "Visa" (ticket) includes the round-trip ferry ride. The ferry ride is short, scenic, and takes only about 5 to 6 minutes.
Ticket Price (Visa + Return Ferry): Around 16,000 KRW for adults (prices may vary slightly by season/promotions).
Ferry Operating Hours & Schedule:
08:00 AM – 09:00 AM: Runs every 30 minutes.
09:00 AM – 06:00 PM: Runs continuously every 10 to 20 minutes.
06:00 PM – 09:00 PM: Runs every 30 minutes. (The last ferry leaving the island is usually at 9:05 PM).
Tip: If you want to avoid the massive crowds and get perfect photos of the empty tree-lined paths, catch the very first ferry at 8:00 AM!
Method 2: The Skyline ZipWire (For Thrill Seekers)
Why take a boat when you can fly over the Han River? The Skyline ZipWire is an exhilarating way to enter the island. You start from an 80-meter-high tower and glide down directly onto Nami Island.
Ticket Price: Approximately 49,900 KRW. (This price includes your entrance visa to Nami Island AND the return ferry ticket back to the mainland).
Duration: The ride itself takes about 1.5 minutes.
Operating Hours: 09:00 AM – 06:00 PM (Operation depends heavily on weather conditions like wind and rain).
Courses:
Family Course: Lands directly on Nami Island (Highly recommended).
Adventure Course: Lands on nearby Jara Island, and you take a small dedicated boat to Nami Island.
Tip: The ZipWire is extremely popular. Arrive early or book online in advance, as slots can sell out by lunchtime!
3. Top Things to Do and See on the Island
Once you arrive, Nami Island is yours to explore. The island is roughly 460,000 square meters, making it perfect for a half-day or full-day trip.
π² Stroll Through the Iconic Tree Lanes
Metasequoia Lane: The most famous photo spot on the island. These towering, majestic trees look stunning in all four seasons, especially covered in winter snow or vibrant summer green.
Ginkgo Tree Lane: If you visit in late October to early November, this path turns into a brilliant sea of golden yellow.
Central Korean Pine Tree Lane: A beautiful, fragrant path lined with traditional pine trees, perfect for a peaceful walk.
π΄ Rent a Bicycle Walking is great, but biking is the most fun way to explore the outer edges of the island.
Rental Options: Single bikes, tandem (couple) bikes, and family bikes with canopies are available at the Bike Center near the center of the island.
Sky-bike: For a unique view, try the elevated rail bike that pedals through the treetops!
πΈ Find the Winter Sonata Spots Even if you haven't watched the classic early 2000s K-drama Winter Sonata, the photo zones are charming. Look out for the life-sized statue of the main characters and the famous "First Kiss Glass Sequoia Bridge."
π¦ Meet the Roaming Animals Nami Island is a cruelty-free, nature-friendly zone. As you walk around, you will casually bump into freely roaming peacocks, rabbits, and friendly squirrels. There is also an Ostrich Village where you can safely observe these giant birds.
4. What to Eat on and around Nami Island
You cannot visit this region without trying the local specialty: Chuncheon Dakgalbi (Spicy Stir-fried Chicken).
Before/After the Island: The area right in front of the Gapyeong ferry terminal is packed with Dakgalbi restaurants. They serve marinated chicken sizzled on a large iron pan with cabbage, sweet potatoes, and rice cakes. Don't forget to order fried rice at the end!
On the Island: There are plenty of cafes and restaurants inside the island serving everything from traditional Korean food to wood-fired pizza.
Must-Try Street Food: Look for the Snowman Hotteok (sweet Korean pancake filled with sugar and nuts) and soft-serve ice cream. They are perfect snacks while walking the trails.
5. Essential Tips for International Visitors
Best Time to Visit: Autumn (mid-October to early November) for fall foliage, and Winter (December to February) for a snowy, romantic landscape. Spring and Summer offer beautiful greenery and pleasant biking weather.
Luggage Storage: If you are carrying heavy bags, there are coin lockers available at the ferry terminal ticket area on the mainland, and also a few inside the island.
Combine Your Trip: Nami Island is very close to other top attractions like Petite France, the Garden of Morning Calm, and the Gangchon Rail Bike. Consider using the Gapyeong City Tour Bus to visit multiple spots in one day.
Wear Comfortable Shoes: The island consists mostly of unpaved dirt paths to preserve nature, so sneakers or comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
Ready for your adventure? Nami Island offers a perfect escape from the bustling city of Seoul. Pack your camera, grab your "visa," and get ready to create unforgettable memories in the Naminara Republic!
