The Ultimate Guide: How to Get from Incheon Airport (ICN) to Haeundae Beach, Busan

Welcome to Korea! If you’ve just landed at Incheon International Airport (ICN) and your final destination is the beautiful coastal area of Haeundae in Busan, you might be wondering about the best way to travel across the country.

While taking a domestic flight is an option, the most popular, reliable, and scenic route is taking the KTX (Korea Train Express) bullet train.

In this comprehensive guide, I will walk you through every single step of the journey, from picking up your luggage at Incheon Airport to feeling the ocean breeze at Haeundae Beach. Let’s get started!

Phase 1: Incheon Airport (ICN) to Seoul Station

To catch the KTX bullet train to Busan, you first need to get to Seoul Station. The easiest and fastest way is using the AREX (Airport Railroad Express).

  • Step 1: Find the AREX Terminal After passing through customs and picking up your WiFi egg or SIM card, follow the yellow signs that say "Airport Railroad" (곡항철도). It will lead you to the basement level (B1).

  • Step 2: Choose Your Train (Express vs. All-Stop)

    • Express Train (Orange signs): Goes non-stop directly to Seoul Station. Takes about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 (51 mins from Terminal 2). You get a reserved seat. Highly recommended!

    • All-Stop Train (Blue signs): Stops at 14 stations. Takes about 60-66 minutes. It acts like a regular subway, so you might have to stand.

  • Step 3: Buy a Ticket You can buy an Express Train ticket from the orange vending machines (English is available). Keep the QR code ticket handy to scan at the gates.

Phase 2: Seoul Station to Busan Station (The Bullet Train)

Welcome to Seoul Station! Now, it's time to ride the KTX to Busan.

  • Step 1: Book in Advance (Crucial!) KTX tickets sell out quickly, especially on weekends. It is highly recommended to book your tickets in advance via the official LetsKorail website or app.

  • Step 2: Follow the KTX Signs When you get off the AREX at Seoul Station, follow the signs for "KTX Tracks." You will take a couple of escalators up to the main concourse.

  • Step 3: Check the Departure Board Look at the large electronic departure boards. Find your train number (e.g., KTX 123) and its departure time. About 15 minutes before departure, the track number (usually between 3 and 14) will appear next to it.

  • Step 4: Enjoy the Ride There are no ticket barriers for the KTX; simply walk to your track, find your train car, and sit in your reserved seat. The journey to Busan takes about 2.5 hours. Feel free to eat snacks and enjoy the Korean countryside passing by!

Phase 3: Busan Station to Haeundae Beach

You’ve made it to Busan! Haeundae is on the eastern side of the city, about 15-20 kilometers away from Busan Station. You have three main options to get there:

Option A: The Subway (Cheapest, but requires walking)

  • Follow the signs for the Busan Metro Line 1 (Orange Line).

  • Take Line 1 heading towards Nopo.

  • Get off at Seomyeon Station (Station 119).

  • Transfer to Line 2 (Green Line) heading towards Jangsan.

  • Get off at Haeundae Station (Station 258). Use Exit 3 or 5 and walk straight for 10 minutes to see the beach.

  • Tip: This takes about 50 minutes. Not recommended if you have very heavy luggage due to stairs and crowded transfer stations.

Option B: Express Bus 1001 (Best Balance)

  • Walk out the main exit of Busan Station. Cross the road to the bus stop located on the bus island in the middle of the street.

  • Take the red Express Bus 1001.

  • It takes about 45-55 minutes and drops you right near Haeundae Station. It’s easier than the subway if you have bags.

Option C: Taxi (Most Comfortable)

  • If you are tired from your long flight, a taxi is a lifesaver. Head to the official taxi stand right outside Busan Station.

  • The ride takes about 40-50 minutes depending on traffic and costs around 20,000 to 25,000 KRW ($15 - $20 USD).

  • Show this to the driver:

"ν•΄μš΄λŒ€ ν•΄μˆ˜μš•μž₯ 근처둜 κ°€μ£Όμ„Έμš”." (Please take me near Haeundae Beach.) (Tip: Have your hotel's exact address and phone number ready in Korean!)

Final Tips for a Smooth Journey

  • T-Money Card: Buy a T-Money transit card at any convenience store at Incheon Airport. You can use it to pay for the All-Stop AREX, Busan subways, buses, and even taxis.

  • Luggage Storage: If you arrive in Haeundae before check-in time, there are lockers inside Haeundae Subway Station where you can safely store your bags.

Safe travels, and enjoy the stunning ocean views, delicious seafood, and vibrant nightlife of Haeundae!
