A Perfect Day in Jamsil: Reaching for the Clouds at Lotte World Tower & Finding Peace at Seokchon Lake
If you want to experience the ultimate contrast of Seoul—hyper-modern architectural marvels right next to tranquil, nature-filled escapes—you absolutely have to visit the Jamsil area. Stepping out of the subway, you are immediately greeted by two of the city's most iconic landmarks: the dizzying heights of Lotte World Tower and the serene waters of Seokchon Lake.
Here is everything you need to know about navigating these two must-visit spots.
π’ Lotte World Tower: Touching the Sky
Piercing the clouds at a staggering 555 meters (1,821 feet), the Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in South Korea and the 6th tallest in the world. Its sleek, tapering design is inspired by traditional Korean ceramics and writing brushes, making it a masterpiece of modern engineering.
What you can't miss:
Seoul Sky Observatory (Floors 117–123): This is the crown jewel of the tower. The journey begins with the Sky Shuttle, an elevator that rockets you to the 117th floor in exactly one minute, complete with immersive 3D screens on the walls and ceiling.
The Sky Deck: Located on the 118th floor, this features the world’s highest glass-bottomed observation deck. Walking across the transparent floor with the tiny cars buzzing nearly half a kilometer below you is a thrilling, knee-weakening experience!
Lotte World Mall: If you suffer from a fear of heights, the massive mall at the base of the tower has you covered. It houses a luxury department store, a massive multiplex cinema, an impressive indoor aquarium, and countless gourmet dining options.
Traveler’s Tip: Time your visit to the Seoul Sky Observatory about an hour before sunset. You will get to see the sprawling metropolis bathed in golden hour light, watch the sun dip below the Han River, and then see the city transform into a sparkling ocean of neon lights.
π³ Seokchon Lake: An Urban Oasis
After the high-energy, dizzying heights of the tower, taking a stroll around Seokchon Lake is the perfect way to ground yourself. Located right at the base of the Lotte World complex, the lake is divided into two distinct halves: the East Lake and the West Lake, connected by a scenic walking path.
What makes it special:
The View of Magic Island: The West Lake wraps around the outdoor portion of Lotte World theme park, known as "Magic Island." Walking along the shore, you can see a fairytale-style castle and hear the distant screams of people on rollercoasters, all with the futuristic Lotte World Tower looming in the background. It’s one of the most unique photo spots in Seoul!
The East Lake Tranquility: If you want a quieter experience, head to the East Lake. It's lined with trendy cafes, lush trees, and locals enjoying a peaceful jog. Grab an iced Americano from a nearby cafe and sit on one of the benches to just soak in the view.
Seasonal Magic: If you visit in spring (early April), Seokchon Lake transforms into a pink wonderland with over 1,000 cherry blossom trees blooming along the 2.5km loop. In autumn, it’s equally stunning with vibrant red and golden leaves reflecting off the water.
